Relieve Xerostomia With These 4 Simple Methods

Relieve Xerostomia/Dry Mouth With These 4 Tips

Xerostomia or also known as dry mouth is a condition where your salivary glands aren’t able to produce enough saliva to keep your mouth moist. Saliva is mostly made of water, but it contains substances that will help to prevent bacteria and fungal infections as well as tooth decay.

When you don’t produce enough saliva, your mouth becomes very dry and the feeling is uneasy, especially when you’re speaking. Fortunately, there are plenty of remedies to help with dry mouth. Here are a few you could try!

1. Drink Less Coffee

Coffee produces the positive effects that everyone loves that includes making you feel more awake, improve concentration and alleviate fatigue. However, one downside of drinking coffee is that it contributes to a dry oral environment.

Tip: Cut down on your caffeine intake. If you still need to have coffee in order to help you function well, then drink plenty of water after having your caffeinated beverage.

2. Improve Oral Hygiene

Dry mouth can be a symptom as well as a source of poor oral hygiene. It’s essential to take appropriate measures in ensuring good oral health and to avoid oneself from getting dry mouth.

Tip: Good oral hygiene includes frequent brushing of teeth, flossing, using mouthwash after brushing and utilising a tongue scraper or a toothbrush to remove and reduce bacteria on your tongue.

3. Use Alcohol-free Mouthwash

Mouthwash plays an important role in maintaining good oral hygiene. However, certain mouthwash contains ingredients like xylitol which may contribute to dry mouth.

Tip: Use alcohol-free mouthwash that is specifically designed for dry mouth and rinse your mouth regularly.

4. Drink Sufficient Water

Dehydration often results in dry mouth. When your body does not have enough water, you aren’t able to produce the saliva you need.

Tip: If you haven’t been drinking much water, it’s time to do so. Increase your water intake to stay hydrated and relieve dry mouth symptoms.
